ENDORSEMENTS

Sheriff Gordon Sonne

Sheriff Gordon Sonnè is not running for re-election. He is supporting Lonnie for Sheriff of Monterey County. In his letter of endorsement he describes Lonnie as "an honest, capable, hard working and forthright man." He refers to Lonnie's 31 years with the Department, 22 of those years as a manager, administrator, and executive, stating: "These qualities make Lonnie, by far, the most experienced and qualified candidate."

Sheriff Bud Cook

Former three-term Sheriff Bud Cook worked with Lonnie for over 20 years. Sheriff Cook promoted Lonnie to the rank of Lieutenant, and then promoted him to Chief Deputy of the Corrections Bureau, the largest Bureau in the Department. Sheriff Cook endorses Lonnie for Sheriff of Monterey County.

Jose Celaya

Professional Boxer Jose Celaya is supporting Lonnie for Sheriff. Jose works out and trains at the Sheriff's Department's Neutral Corner Gym, where he is a positive role model for the young people participating in the Youth Sports Program.

Jose graduated from Alisal High School in Salinas in June, 2000. One year later, in June, 2001, Jose returned to Alisal High School's graduation and presented two scholarships for academic achievement. This had particular meaning to Lonnie, who was the first person ever to graduate from Alisal High School, in 1967.

Jose attended Lonnie's formal announcement of his candidacy for Sheriff of Monterey County on the lawn of the Monterey County Courthouse on August 14, 2001. Jose is the type of positive role model Lonnie plans to use in his youth programs to divert our youth from drugs and gangs.

Alvin Harrison

Olympic Gold and Silver Medal Champion sprinter Alvin Harrison is supporting Lonnie for Sheriff, because he knows Lonnie's commitment to youth intervention and diversion programs.

Alvin attended North Salinas High School, and grew up under very difficult personal circumstances. He understands and values the importance of programs that help young people make proper choices and stay on track in their lives. As an Olympic Champion, he is very much a role model that young people will listen to.

Alvin attended a 5K/10K fund raising run for Lonnie's campaign, where he greeted participants and handed out trophies. The response from the crowd, as well as from the people at the horse arena event being held nearby, was tremendous. People ranging from children to a 92 year old lady wanted to have their picture taken with Alvin. Alvin was gracious in posing for pictures, signing autographs, and even raced against a young girl on a horse when he was challenged. Alvin has offered to help Lonnie in further events, and he definitely is an asset to youth and community programs.
