To guarantee your Web site a better chance of being accepted and ranked higher on the search engines, you should follow these 3 general rules:
RULE 1
Don't try to fool the search engine by repeating keywords in long lists unrelated to the content. In fact, avoid using a keyword more than 2 times in a single paragraph just to be safe.
RULE 2
Prioritize the placement of your keywords in your META tags (see example below). If your Web site is about dogs, make sure that the word 'dog' is the first word in your keyword list. Also, make sure that the keywords appear in the content of your page.
RULE 3
Make sure the first three keywords appear in both the title of your page and your description META tag. Most search engines will allow a 200-character description within the META tag and up to 1000 characters of text in the keyword META tag.
If you are unsure about how to set up META tags, here is an example:
< meta name="description" content="A brief description of your site using at least 3 keywords." >
< meta name="keywords" content="keywords, separated, by, commas, two words, can, appear, between quotes" >
Most search engines will display the content of your description META tag along side a link to your Web site. On the average, 16 words will be displayed. Any wording in excess of 16 could be chopped off. So, if you are going to include a longer description, make sure that the first 16 words are in one sentence.
